Earning a degree in engineering is one of students’ proud. Nowadays, engineering major become one of the most favorite majors in various universities in USA, Europe and Asia . Many students study hard so they can get in to the University with Engineering degree. Based on recent survey conducted by students in the Department of Statistics at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), many people think that an engineering student is relatively smarter compared to students with other majors. Of course, they have to study hard ( no doubt ); feel free to argue about this.
In addition, companies generally pays high salary for engineering majors. Here’s the salary survey report for engineering jobs (updated 9 November 2008):
| Engineering | Entry Level (USD) |
20 years or more (USD) |
| Chemical | 58,719 | 102,538 |
| Computer software | 55,687 | 88,618 |
| Material | 55,340 | 96,048 |
| Electrical | 55,015 | 94,967 |
| Mechanical | 53,588 | 84,486 |
| Industrial | 50,701 | 73,225 |
| Civil | 48,151 | 85,915 |

Q : Which engineering major pays the best and the least with a bachelor degree?
A: I would agree that Chemical Engineering has highest paid. Civil Engineering has the lowest salary.
Q: Which engineering major has the most job opportunity?
A: I would say Electrical Engineering offers more universal opportunities. Most of companies look for EE degree, because almost every technology company, and even in biotechnology companies need engineers with electrical engineering background. Even though the entry level pay is not as high as chemical engineers, but electrical engineers with 10 or more years of experiencs can surpass the equivalent earnings of engineers in the other field
Q: Which one is the hardest and easiest degree?
A: Although all engineering majors is hard, but Electrical Engineering is the hardest major i would say. And the easiest major is Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering (based on the student survey)
Overall :
Chemical Engineering has the highest paid with a bachelor degree. However, when you choose a major, do not only based your decision solely on the highest salary; however, you should also consider other factors such as : job opportunities in the market, work load, and your passion.
If you want to complain about your major, this is your chance. Feel Free to argue and leave comments.

Oh man..
I should have majored in Electrical Engineering instead of science major. No money to be made for science major graduates.
This article makes me want to change my major now.

Bunga,
I agree with you. As a computer software engineer, my job is very rewarding. I majored in Electrical Engineering as an undergraduate but right now, I work as a software developer, so indeed electrical engineering major is relatively more universal compared to other engineering fields.

I have to disagree here Bunga…, I remember last year, Software Engineering was the fastest growing job in the next 10 years. This is by CNN. So, this is definitely for Computer Science major. We are an Engineer, Software Engineer!

Well.. I have a feeling starting salaries don’t determine the mean salaries 10 or 20 years down the road. Look at this Soma:

Care to elaborate why engineering jobs are not in the list? Would make a more interesting story.. haha

‘Fastest growing job’ refers to the amount of job openings in this field for the next 10 years. I’m referring to how easy for Software Engineers to get a job after they graduate. I just checked, we’re not on top anymore, Financial Analyst beat us.

It’s true that doctors got (way) higher salaries, but that comes with a long and competitive education process.

Wonderfull…

I would have to disagree that electrical engineering is the hardest…as an undergraduate chemical engineer, I’m absolutely certain we have the hardest, most intense work load. Our entire major is weed out classes–multivariable calc, physics, nonlinear math, thermodynamics, heat transfer, organic chem…it’s not even a question. there’s a reason we make bank.

I myself also a chemical engineering undergraduate, so I feel you =)
